While the standard AR-15 rifle is considered “America’s favorite rifle”, the AK platform is one that just about everybody in the world knows, and many firearms manufacturers have gravitated towards. Originating in Russia, designed by Mikhail Kalishnikov and chambered in 7.62x39mm, the AK has become a timeless weapon, and the civilian market is one of the biggest users. The thing is, Russian made AKs are hard to come by in the United States, and they are not the cheapest, which has almost every manufacturer trying to replicate the Russian rifle recipe. While many AKs on the civilian market can be found to be pretty cheap, one brand sticks out, Zastava; particularly the ZPAP M70.
But what exactly is the Zastava ZPAP M70, and why is it such a great AK rifle? Well, we have tried and tested this rifle, and we have a lot to say. Let’s dive in.
The Zastava ZPAP M70 is a Serbian-made AK-47 variant that has garnered significant attention among firearm enthusiasts, largely those in the civilian market. Known for its rugged design and reliable performance, the ZPAP M70 is often praised for its craftsmanship and adherence to traditional AK-47 aesthetics and functionality. Now let’s further explore the various aspects of the ZPAP M70, including its build quality, performance, and overall value.
One of the standout features of the Zastava ZPAP M70 is its robust build quality, as it can truly take a beating, just like the original Russian version. This rifle is constructed with a stamped receiver, which is thicker than many other AK variants like the milled options, offering enhanced durability and longevity. The trunnion and bolt carrier are also machined, contributing to the rifle's overall sturdiness.
The ZPAP M70 sports a cold hammer-forged barrel, which is chrome-lined to improve corrosion resistance and barrel life. The fit and finish of the rifle are generally excellent, with smooth action and a well-finished exterior.
The ZPAP M70 also comes with wood furniture, modeled after the original AKs. The wood furniture on the M70 is both attractive and functional, providing a classic look and a solid grip. You can also get the M70 in different wood finishes, from the traditional look to darker variants, like the redwood.
In terms of performance, the Zastava ZPAP M70 is known for its reliability and accuracy, which is something that many opponents of the AK try to point out. Those who are not fans of the AK platform state that it is inaccurate, but in all reality this comes down to the skill level of the shooter and the quality of the rifle. With the Zastava ZPAP M70, the rifle functions smoothly, with minimal jamming or misfiring, even under adverse conditions (but you still need to keep it clean and maintained). Its gas-operated mechanism ensures consistent cycling of rounds, making it a dependable choice for both recreational shooting and serious applications.
The Zastava’s accuracy is commendable for an AK platform, which again is something that many opponents of the AK platform will pick on. While it may not match the precision of some Western rifles to a T, Zastava still delivers satisfactory accuracy for its intended purpose. The iron sights are functional, but many users opt to mount optics for improved precision and performance.
The ZPAP M70 offers a comfortable shooting experience with well-designed ergonomics. The stock is sturdy and provides a good cheek weld, while the pistol grip is ergonomic and aids in handling. The controls are standard AK-47 style, which might take some getting used to for those unfamiliar with the platform, but are straightforward and functional.
Though the rifle comes with the classic look, Zastava has designed the ZPAP M70 to be compatible with a wide range of aftermarket accessories. You can easily equip a side rail mount for optics, and the furniture can be swapped out for those preferring tactical rails or different wood finishes. The rifle's muzzle is threaded, allowing for the attachment of various muzzle devices, such as flash hiders or suppressors.
There are several different things to consider when buying a Zastava, as these are not the cheapest rifles on the market so you want to weigh out your pros and cons before spending your money.
Pros:
Cons:
Now, white it may not be the cheapest option for an AK on the market, you are getting a high quality rifle. The Zastava ZPAP M70 really holds up to the reputation of an AK with its durability, performance, and accuracy. We were able to dump a few hundred rounds down range (we are not done yet) without any stoppages, jams, or cleaning, and still ding steel at 100 yards.
That being said, these rifles come in around $1,000-$1,200 new, which is not too bad when you are looking for a quality AK rifle. Now, the decision is up to you and we do not want to sway you one way or the other, this is just our personal opinion on the Zastava ZPAP M70.
The Zastava ZPAP M70 is a solid choice for those seeking a reliable and well-crafted AK-47 variant, even if you are looking for this to be your primary rifle. Its blend of traditional design with modern manufacturing techniques results in a rifle that is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional. While it comes at a higher price point, the quality and performance justify the investment for serious enthusiasts and collectors. Whether for recreational shooting, hunting, or as a defensive tool, the ZPAP M70 stands out as a top contender in the world of AK-47 rifles.
